Poem

Tough Times

I saw depression, cars on rims,
Hungry children singing hymns.
Cardboard shoes and hard corn bread,
A hobo shuffle and hang his head.

Then a cause worth fighting for;
I saw young men go off to war.
Soon all the folks in town would cry
To see a jeep come creeping by.

Each home it passed would heave a sigh;
Then curse themselves for they knew why
The jeep was there. We’d come to learn,
Some family’s son would not return.

But something happened hard to tell.
America, the brave, was well.
And side by side the people swore,
We’ll do our share, we’ll win this war.

The greatness of this country then
Will probably never be again.
So for you younger folks I’m sad
You’ll never feel that pride we had.

It was a thing that’s seldom done,
T'was one for all and all for one..
